038Richard Wright in conversation
Bertoia has been a great market for us. We happened to have a piece in our very first auction. It was the first Bertoia item I ever handled. It had been consigned by a friend of mine. It brought a nice price. It was a great time because at that point the market for Bertoia was very low. . . . Since, we have sold over 600 sculptures at auction. We’ve done two standalone Bertoia auctions. We did a standalone Bertoia auction in New York. It was our first exhibition in our New York space.

036In 2012 I began a new series of performances which I call "Echo surveys". The premise is straightforward: each is entirely unique and site-specific; all sounds heard are either produced live from materials found in the space, or have been prerecorded there during a pre-performance reconnaissance visit. this is an attempt to retain a specific and direct connection with each space and each audience, and to retain a sense of risk associated with each performance.
these three experiments occurred during a visit to the eastern united states each had it’s particularities: the first was in the Galleria of the Baker Center for the Arts at Muhlenberg College, in Allentown, where i was given permissions to ‘play’ the Harry Bertoia kinetic sculptures.

034Recording of Harry Bertoia's Sounding Sculpture, Chicago.
This amazing work is meant to be moved by the wind. However on this day in particular, we found the pool that surrounds the Sounding Sculpture to be empty of water and thus were able to approach to give it a forceful playing.

033Harry Bertoia Sounding Sculpture (Aon Center, Chicago)
Copper-beryllium, brass and granite
Six of 11 elements on display, H 16 ft. (each)
Commissioned by Amoco Corporation.
LOCATION: Aon Center (formerly Amoco Building) Plaza,
200 E. Randolph St.
"While the elements of Harry Bertoia’s sculpture are
abstract, his inspiration comes from nature. A memory
of wheat fields swaying in the breeze and the intriguing
notion of a mythological Aeolian harp activated by the
winds inspired Bertoia to create his “sounding sculpture”
fountain. Installed in two parts, each segment of the
artwork consists of black granite bases supporting
brass plates, from which rise rows of flexible rods of
thin copper. Wind currents cause the rods to vibrate at
various frequencies according to their lengths, creating
pleasing musical sounds."

A friend lent me a pair of Bertoia sound sculptures this week, and I just had to make a short recording of them before he takes them away again! So cool sounding.
